The Atlas moth (Attacus atlas) is the largest moth in the world, with a wingspan of up to 24 cm for males and 30 cm for females. It is also known as the snake-head moth, the ghost moth, and the atlas moth.



Atlas moths are members of the Saturniidae family of silkworm moths. They have a double-comb antenna, with the male's antenna being wider and the body being smaller than the female's. The dominant color is light brown, with a characteristic ornate pattern. The tip of the forewing is extended to resemble a snake's head, and the center of the wing has white spots with black triangular borders. Atlas moths are beautiful and are often kept in collections.


Female atlas moths lay 250-290 eggs at a time, but only 4 caterpillars survive to pupate and about 2 pupae develop into adult moths. The larvae hatch after 2-3 weeks, grow to a length of 11.5 cm, and are dark brown in color. The body has many densely packed brown-black spots, white powder, and a dark blue spine-like hair on the dorsal side. There is a violet stripe near the anus. The larvae feed on the leaves and young shoots of many types of forest trees and fruit trees.


Atlas moths are found in Southeast Asia, India, China, Japan, and Australia. They are an important part of the ecosystem and play a role in pollination. Atlas moths are also a popular tourist attraction and are often featured in art and literature.
