Winless in their last five starts, the Canberra Raiders find themselves in dire straits heading into Round 9 but now face a potential wooden-spoon rival, the Canterbury Bulldogs, who will be looking to build some momentum after an impressive victory. The Raiders let another lead slip as they suffered a heartbreaking 21-20 golden point defeat at the hands of the Warriors. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs were tough and gritty in a tense 16-12 win over the Roosters as they escaped the foot of the ladder. Canberra captain Jarrod Croker has been named for the first time in 2022 with Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad returning to fullback and Xavier Savage dropping out. Jack Wighton’s suspension sees Matt Frawley named at five-eighth while Elliott Whitehead returns to the 13 and Sebastian Kris is added to the bench. Josh Jackson is back from his bout of COVID-19, which pushes Billy Tsikrikas out of Canterbury’s 17. Brent Naden is also back, taking Jayden Okunbor’s wing spot.

The Battle of the West is back for its first edition since the heated 2021 Semi-final which ended in a gut-wrenching defeat for the Parramatta Eels. The Eels have lost four in a row against the Penrith Panthers – something that hasn’t happened since 1971. To make matters worse, they’ve averaged just 6.5 points in those four contests, a trend that may prove difficult to reverse given Penrith is allowing a league-best 11.0 per match this season. The Eels put forward their worst performance of the season so far in last week’s 35-4 loss to the Cowboys in Darwin, while Penrith is hotter than ever with eight wins on the trot to start its premiership defence. The Panthers keep an unchanged lineup with Moses Leota and Brian To’o close to returning. Dylan Brown moves back to five-eighth as Tom Opacic returns to the Eels’ 17 in the centres while Jakob Arthur drops to the reserves.
