The Simba armored personnel carrier was more than just a 4×4 vehicle—it was the Philippines’ first real attempt to build its own defense industry. Produced locally under license from the UK’s GKN Sankey in the early 1990s, the Simba symbolized ambition, self-reliance, and national pride.

But while around 150 units were assembled and deployed in Mindanao counter-insurgency operations, the project never evolved into a sustainable defense industry. Thin armor, limited funding, and the absence of a long-term strategy meant that Simba became not the start of an indigenous industry, but a one-off experiment.
