"I Have a Story" Secretariat's Stableman: I touched Superman - Greg McQuade / WTVR (6/4/23)

June 9th, 2023 marks the 50th anniversary of one of the greatest feats in sports history. It was the day that Virginia born race horse Secretariat captured the Triple Crown and the attention of Americans from coast to coast. In his latest “I Have a Story” Greg McQuade introduces us to one man from Caroline County who witnessed greatness from the beginning.
Alvin Mines worked in the stables at The Meadow horse farm when Secretariat was just a foal in 1970. Alvin and his colleagues recognized almost immediately how special and powerful the horse was. Secretariat would go on to shatter records at the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness and at the Belmont Stakes in 1973. Records that still stand today. Alvin says Secretariat was a legend and he believes those records will never be broken. Alvin says as Virginians we are lucky to claim one of the greatest athletes in history as our own.
