The Hanging Gardens of Babylon are the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World that has never been definitively located by archaeologists. While legend attributes them to King Nebuchadnezzar II in Babylon, modern evidence suggests the gardens were actually in Nineveh, 300 miles north of Babylon.

After Assyria conquered Babylon in 689 BCE, Nineveh was referred to as "New Babylon," and its gates were renamed after Babylonian gates, likely causing historical confusion for later Greek writers.
A bas-relief from the palace of the Assyrian King Sennacherib in Nineveh depicts a lush, tiered garden with trees growing on arches, matching ancient descriptions of the "hanging" gardens.
Sennacherib’s own inscriptions describe a "wonder for all peoples" and detail a massive aqueduct system (the Jerwan Aqueduct) and early water screws used to lift water to high terraces.
