What could be causing symptoms of upper abdominal pain? Learn common and emergent causes of upper abdominal pain using this simple mnemonic, and how to best approach and manage it.

There are many causes to upper abdominal pain including pregnancy, ectopic pregnancy, gallbladder or biliary disease including cholecystitis or cholangitis, liver disease such as hepatitis, stomach or gastric ulcers, pancreatitis, kidney stones, urinary tract or kidney infections, appendicitis, bowel obstruction, volvulus, heart attack or myocardial infarction, pneumonia, or pulmonary embolism.

This mnemonic will help you remember common and emergent causes to upper right sided, upper left sided, and upper midline abdominal pain. Associated symptoms could include bloating, nausea, vomiting, constipation, changes in stool, chest pain, shortness of breath, or fevers.

Considering all the causes will help to best manage and treat the underlying problem.
