Title: Millimeter-wave Astronomy – The Green Bank Connection
Abstract: Millimeter-wave astronomy is just over 50 years old, but in that time, has changed our view of the universe. By revealing the presence of! cold molecular gas and dust, astronomers are unlocking the secrets of star and planet formation and the evolution of the early universe. In addition, millimeter astronomy has recently revealed the event horizons of black holes. Millimeter / submillimeter-wave astronomy is a major scientific sub-discipline now facilitated by the ALMA Observatory, the most ambitious ground-based observatory yet built. The technical origins of modern millimeter-wave astronomy began in Green Bank with the vision of Frank Drake, Frank Low, and others. In this talk, we'll review science highlights of mm/submm astronomy, its technical origins in Green Bank, how it evolved technically and scientifically to its present state, and has now come full-circle back to Green Bank. We'll close with a quick peak to the future.
