Here is some helpful information from the NYSSMA Manual (edition 34):
All Students preparing improvisation are encouraged to:
-Study recordings and video performances of songs that they learn for improvisation.
-Become familiar with the terminology associated with jazz improvisation, such as:
-"head" — melody of the song.
-"chorus" — specific number of measures with a specific harmonic progression.
-Become familiar with various musical forms used in jazz, such as 12-bar blues, 16-bar -song form (AB), 24-bar song form (AAB), 32-bar song form (AABA or ABAB).
-Be mindful of the count-off and then focus on playing in time with the rhythm track.
-Be aware that some songs may begin with pickup notes.
-Be aware that head melodies are often notated without articulations or jazz nuances; therefore, playing the melody as notated is not the goal. When playing the head, performers are encouraged to present the melody using common performance practices including adding embellishments to the written notes and rhythms and adding common jazz nuances. For example, ornamentation and note bending.
-Learn to identify chord tones and various scales that are associated with each chord to make informed note choices while improvising.
-Be aware of the style of the song and play rhythms that reflect common practices of that style.
-Begin their improvisation in any open “solo break” or pickup measures if the recorded accompaniment track leaves solo space.

Piano, Guitar, Bass and Vibraphone soloists are encouraged to:
-Consult source recordings.
-Study common practices of rhythm section accompaniment.
-Consider the style of the song when developing the rhythm section accompaniment of the song.
-Consider the various comping options (on piano, guitar & vibraphone).
-Be aware of interaction with other rhythm section elements and with a soloist.
