Studio owner and lead artist Karlos Kowaleski explains the type of warm and inviting atmosphere and environment clients can expect at Box5 Tattoo & Fine Art in Livonia, Michigan.

My name is Karlos Kowaleski, and this is my studio—Box5 Tattoo in Livonia.

As an owner, my intentions are to create a place in my hometown where people can also feel at home, especially with a procedure as vulnerable and involved as getting tattooed. I want to give the same warmth, comfort, and hospitality you'd get if you walked into anybody’s home.

The environment is pretty important when getting tattooed. You want to have a calm setting, a place you can feel comfortable, not on-edge, anxious, or agitated. The people surrounding you will probably try to connect with you, because that’s human nature—our artists here will make a very strong connection with you and a bond. But really, you just want to find a place where you feel comfortable.

If you feel comfortable in a studio with death metal blasting as loud as possible, go for it. My studio’s a little bit different—it’s a little bit calmer, you’ll have some old school throwback music and gentle conversation with your tattoo.

As far as art galleries go, my studio is designed to feature realism and hyper-realism artwork. Most studios and art galleries are designed to sell just what sells. I have a love for finer-crafted paintings and for finer-crafted tattoos, so we have a lot of art on the walls for sale. A number of the pieces are my own, of course, as the owner, operator, and artist. But I have a lot of other art as well from colleagues within the industry, amazing American realist painters. I have some international art and a lot local to the Livonia area, as well.
