Below is a brief description of the project - During hospitalization, some minor technical issues can cause a lot of distress to the patient. The most common is the nursing staff being too busy to notice that the saline bottle has finished. In spite of the best medical and nursing care, this becomes a contentious issue. As a consequence, there might be an air embolism, which might cause cardiac complications with the possibility of cardiac arrest among the patient with underlying Cardiac problems (which may be unknown). It might also add to the chances of infection in the patient’s body. There might be clotting. Even in reverse, blood might flow toward the empty saline bottle. It will increase panic among family members and patients. Moreover, it may give rise to a fight between the patient’s attendants and the hospital staff. ‘Venous Air Embolism’ is rare but fatal.
This simple solution, the "Smart Saline Sensor," can prevent all the possibilities of venous air embolism and reverse blood flow. We just need to equip every bed in every hospital with one such device. Currently, no hospital uses such devices. Given the cost-effective nature of the product, hospitals will not hesitate to buy it. Moreover, even patients might want to buy it for further safety. There may be a demand for at least one million units every year. We further plan to integrate it with a mobile app, which will send real-time alerts about various body vitals to the nursing station.
