In May 2022, Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant launched its third buoy in southern Lake Michigan—this one, nicknamed "Chuoy" for Chicago Buoy, based in the busy waters off Navy Pier. Data from this new buoy are helping the National Weather Service (NWS) Chicago develop more accurate forecasts and warnings, especially related to nearshore wave heights and wind speeds. The buoy also helps researchers, boaters, anglers, and beach goers.
