This experiment is focused on the concept of heat transfer. Heat always travels from warmer areas/objects to cooler ones.

You are going to prevent this transfer from happening by using insulation. Insulation is material that is used to block the transfer of heat from one substance/area to another.

Materials used for this project, you will need: Cardboard, Hard foam (polystyrene/styrofoam/recycled plastic foam), thermocol, aluminium foil, scissors or cutter, glue or glue gun, Small fan (optional), ice

Step 1: Cut and glue the cardboard.
Start by building the outside of your refrigerator. Based on how much cardboard you have, measure and cut six pieces that form a cuboid when glued together. Make sure that your fridge has a door that can open and close. If you want, you can include a small shelf to maximize how much it can store.

Step 2: Add insulation
The purpose of the cooler box is to keep heat from outside the box getting inside and warming the stuff you want to keep cool. You’re going to use your foam as an insulator for your refrigerator. You need to cut and glue the foam so that it covers the inside walls of your cooler box.

Step 3: Add ice
Your insulation will keep the box from getting hotter, but it will not make it colder. That’s why you will need to put a few blocks of ice in the bottom of the box. For even better results, you can add a small fan.

Step 4: Test the effect of your cooler box
How long can your cooler box keep ice from melting? Place your cooler box in the sun and make note of how long it takes the ice inside your cooler box to melt. Compare this time with how long it takes ice to melt in the direct sun.

Make notes about the cooling effect of insulation.

My conclusion is that I think insulation was a good thing to consider for designing my product to keep my supplies cooler from heat. Because the ice bowl was put near direct sunlight, it melted faster than the ice in my cooler box because it is made inside and out of insulation.
