Описание к видео Galton Board (probability)💡 [How does this relate to making video games part 4]

Galton Board (probability calculations)💡 [How does this relate to making video games part 4]

This is a new series I am experimenting with explaining certain operations we use a lot in making video games you might never knew, or are worth studying if you aspire to become a game developer. With today's topic: Galton Board for probability calculations 🤩

A galton board is a device that simulates that randomness can be predictable.
And that’s exactly what we need when we want to have control over our games. 😉

In a galton board, Each ball that falls has a 50% chance to bounce left or right. Add those probabilities together, and over time they form a binomial distribution — that beautiful bell-shaped curve. Most results cluster in the middle, while only a few reach the far edges.

This can then control many aspects of gaming, like loot from enemies, gacha systems, skill checks and more!

For example, take a slot machine.
Each reel looks random, but internally the game assigns weights. By adjusting these weights, us developers controls the overall win rate of the machine.

So, probability calculations like this make it possible for rewarding systems to balance the outcome, while still keeping the game exciting and unpredictable.

Just like the Galton board, many rewarding systems in games feel random. But across thousands of trials, the results fall into a predictable distribution. Which most importantly, keeps the game economy in balance. 😉
