I got an old hand plane from the 1950s for my second tool restoration project. I believe it is a Stanley 5 as I could use spare parts from a contemporary model from them (this one: https://amzn.to/3uFpGWm). However, there is no brand name on the hand plane, just the ENGLAND mark.

It was an interesting restoration project for me. It took me longer than I expected, mainly due to my crazy idea of removing old chrome plating and replacing it with a new one.

The plating was partly lost. I tried to remove it by sanding, but it was impossible, so I decided to find another way. I got a chrome stripping solution that promised to dissolve the chrome plating with no base metal damage.

Unfortunately, it did not work as it expected to do... the parts were ruined, and I got another task - to find a replacement. God bless England for its consistency! The parts from a modern plane fitted perfectly.

Another thing I would make different beside of chrome plating issue is painting. I believe that originally the plane sides were painted, so I did the same. However, it would be better to cold blue the sides of the plane rather than painting them. The paint will be damaged if I or somebody use the plane for real work.
