In this video, we’ll talk about how to make Negative sentences in Chinese.

Chinese uses different forms for negative action. Today we’ll learn two negation words 不 (bù) and 没有 (méiyǒu), and compare the difference between these two words.

The first Negation Word we’re going to learn is 不 (bù).

Negating adjectives

We use 不 (bù) to negate adjectives. To negate an adjective, simply place 不 (bù) before it. Eg. 她不高兴。

Negating verbs
不 (bù) is also used to negate a verb in the present or future, or to talk about habitual actions. Eg. 我不喝酒

Almost all verbs can be negated with 不 (bù) (unless you're talking about the past). The only verb that can never be negated with 不 (bù) is 有 (yǒu).

没有

Rather than placing 不 (bù) before it, you must use 没 (méi) to negate the verb 有 (yǒu).

The Short Form of 没有 (méiyǒu) Is 没 (méi)

Now, let’s look at the second negation word 没有 (méiyǒu)

It’s generally used for the negative of the past tense.

还没有
It’s generally used for the negative of the present perfect tense(has/have not done yet).
