Here's the preview, commercial break and first few minutes of the 10pm edition of Eyewitness News with Fahey Flynn and Joel Daly on WLS Channel 7, with brief appearances by Tim Weigel and Dr. Walt Lyons (the latter of whom is seen but not heard).

This was one of the last editions to use the edit of Lalo Schifrin's "Tar Sequence" theme (from "Cool Hand Luke" [1967]) that had originated in 1968 from sister station WABC Channel 7 in New York (and which WABC itself used to early 1984), before WLS replaced it with the "On Your Side" theme which would be used through about 1984.

The point-blank murder of Archbishop Oscar Romero of San Salvador (an outspoken human rights supporter) by four gunmen as he was leading a funeral mass

Tehran's call for a mass protest at the U.S. Embassy (over the deposed Shah's move from Panama to Egypt) on Day 142 of the hostage crisis, and a judge vowing to try the 52 hostages as spies

Joel reports on these stories:

Shah's ostensible cancer treatment in Egyptian hospital, and postponement on any surgery until an improvement in his condition (his temperature was 104 degrees); President Sadat says the Shah's in Egypt to stay

19-year-old Latin King Juan Caballero recommended for electric chair by Chicago jury for his role in slashing murders of three teenagers the year before (he and Luis Ruiz were convicted of murder, armed violence and unlawful restraint)

Fahey reports on police search for driver of 1977 or '78 Chevrolet Caprice that struck and killed 9-year-old Southwest Side girl, Nannette Gonzalez, and sped off; investigator John Puhr speaks about the case and gives out the police information phone number
