The Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities is proud to host Prof. Mary-Claire King, American Cancer Society Professor in the Departments of Genome Sciences and Medicine at the University of Washington in Seattle, who delivered the 2024 Albert Einstein Annual Lecture, "Human Genetics and Human Rights: Developing DNA Familial Matching to Search for the Disappeared Grandchildren of Argentina". Opening remarks by Chair of the Sciences Division at the Academy, Prof. Yadin Dudai.

Prof. King was the first to show that breast cancer is inherited in some families, as the result of mutations in the gene that she discovered and named BRCA1. Her other research interests include the genetic bases of severe mental illness, the genetic causes of birth disorders in children, and human genetic diversity and evolution. She pioneered the use of DNA sequencing for human rights investigations, applying mitochondrial DNA sequencing to the identification of kidnapped children in Argentina and subsequently to cases of human rights violations on six continents.

האקדמיה הלאומית הישראלית למדעים גאה לארח את פרופ' מארי-קלייר קינג, פרופסור האגודה האמריקאית לסרטן במחלקות למדעי הגנום ולרפואה באוניברסיטת ושינגטון שבסיאטל, אשר נשאה את ההרצאה השנתית על שם אלברט איינשטיין לשנת 2024.
פרופ' קינג היא חוקרת פורצת דרך שזכתה להכרה בין-לאומית בשל גילוי גן ה- (BReast CAncer Gene 1) BRCA1, גילוי אשר הוכיח לראשונה את הקשר הגנטי שבין מוטציות מסוימות לבין הסיכון המוגבר לסרטן השד והשחלות.
הרצאתה בירושלים עסקה בשיטה שפיתחה לזיהוי גנטי של ילדים שנחטפו בתקופת המשטר הצבאי בארגנטינה ושאפשרה לרבים מהם להתאחד עם משפחותיהם לאחר שנים ארוכות. הטכניקה מבוססת בין השאר על ריצוף DNA מיטוכונדריאלי, המאפשר לזהות קשרי משפחה בין ילדים לבין סבתם או קרובי משפחה אחרים מצד האם.
