The government's decision to ban these platforms in a bid to silence dissent backfired spectacularly. It was the final straw that triggered a massive youth protest led by activist Sudaan Gurung. When the police's brutal response led to the deaths of 19 youngsters, the peaceful protest turned violent, forcing Prime Minister KP Oli to resign and flee for his life.

This crisis holds a crucial lesson for governments everywhere: in the age of social media, you cannot hide corruption or suppress the voices of your youth. Transparency and accountability are the only way forward. We also compare this with recent protests in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
