This is a tessellating pattern based around a hexagon grid, starting with a circle and six interseting lines. This particular design is characteristic of work decorating the Qarawiyyin Mosque in Fez, Morocco where it is repeated and set in various grid formations.

One of the things that fascinates me most about this is that every line is a stepping-stone to the next - every single line in the composition is required for the next to be drawn. I learnt this from Eric Broug's wonderful book, 'Islamic Geometric Design' - it's a wealth of knowledge for anyone interested in Islamic art and is something I refer to very often when working in this form.
