...It was early morning when the car jolted to a stop, waking Iti. She blinked in confusion at the unfamiliar landscape, the sky shifting from night to shades of pink. Shiv stepped out to ask a local for directions, but as he turned back, he felt Iti’s gentle touch at the hem of his kurta. “Shiv,” she whispered, “humein bhook lag rahi hai” (I’m hungry).

Once, Shiv would have never let her eat anything outside the strict boundaries of her “satvik” diet. But everything had changed, and so had he. He paused, then smiled, silently acknowledging how wrong he'd been to bind her to his rigid beliefs. With a nod, he gestured for her to stay in the car as he returned with some fruit.

As the engine roared back to life, Iti asked, “hum kahaan jaa rahe hein?” Shiv’s heart sank. He didn’t know how to answer her. With a forced smile, he lied. “Aapki agli training par jaa rahe hein. Ab aapko logon ke beech mein rehkar unhe jaan-na hoga. Tab hi to aap unke dukh samajh paayengi. Haina?” he said, trying to sound convincing. Iti’s face lit up with excitement. She still believed in her divine purpose, unaware of the lie that had shaped her life. Shiv whispered, “Aur aap devi hein yeh bass hum dono ke beech ka secret hona chahiye. Okay?”

“Kyun?” Iti asked innocently.

“kyunki tab hi logon ke asli mann ko jaan paayengi, ek secret spy ki tarah…hmm?” he replied, keeping the illusion alive.

As they drove, Shiv struggled with the weight of his decision. It wasn’t just the road ahead that haunted him, but the truth he could no longer keep hidden — the truth about her father’s death and the deceit that had defined their lives. He didn’t know how or when he would tell Iti, but he knew the day of reckoning was coming.
