It was established by the British East India Company in 1690 and served as the capital of British India until 1911. The city has a rich cultural and intellectual heritage and played a pivotal role in India's struggle for independence.

Kolkata was a hub for trade and commerce during the British colonial period and became a center for art, literature, and social reform movements. It's known for landmarks like the Victoria Memorial, Howrah Bridge, and the Indian Museum.

The city has witnessed significant historical events, including the Bengal Renaissance, the partition of Bengal in 1905, and the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in 1919. Today, Kolkata continues to be a vibrant cultural and commercial center, blending its colonial past with modern developments.
