Should you pay off credit cards before you file for divorce?

 Paying off credit cards before you file for divorce? Talk to your lawyer first. My general advice is don't do it.

You don't want to clear out debt that could be something that you might be able to use to your advantage. In a divorce case, you don't want to use money that's in a bank account that you could use for something.

You don't want to take money out of a retirement account that you could use for something else, just to pay off those credit cards.

There's sometimes the possibility that those credit cards could be the responsibility of the other person in your divorce. You don't wanna give up that opportunity.

If you pay it off, it's done. You don't have any choice whatsoever. That's another big mistake that people make. Don't make that mistake. Talk to your attorney first.
