Strood Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Описание к видео Strood Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Kent, and 30 miles east, and slightly south, of central London, is the town of Strood.

Geographically, Strood is situated at the west bank of the River Medway with the town of Rochester on the opposite side (seen at the end of the walk). This makes it historically significant from a Roman perspective. When the Romans invaded Britain in AD 43, they were met with significant resistance from the native Britons at the Battle of Medway. This battle is said to have lasted for two days before the Romans finally forced the Britons to retreat towards the Thames, having tried in vain to defend the area believed to be in the vicinity of where Strood stands today.

The town's name is derived from Old English 'strōd', meaning 'marshy land overgrown with brushwood'. In the 12th century a church was built here - originally as a chapel of ease to the neighbouring parish of Frindsbury before Strood itself became a parish later that century. The church, dedicated to St Nicholas, was rebuilt in stone in the 14th century.

In 1845 the railway arrived in Strood. This was a precursor to the present station which opened in 1856. The initial station closed that same year. The station of today is situated on the North Kent Line which runs between Lewisham and Rochester, as well as being the northern terminus of the Medway Valley Line which runs to Paddock Wood.
