RM-7 DIY Ribbon Mics - Blumlein Pair Blues Recording of Acoustic Guitar & Upright Bass | Route 66

Описание к видео RM-7 DIY Ribbon Mics - Blumlein Pair Blues Recording of Acoustic Guitar & Upright Bass | Route 66

Check out the classical blues song Route 66 recorded with a Blumlein pair of RM-7 DIY Ribbon Mics. The recording features an acoustic guitar and rough male vocals by Dmitry Tagarin and a finger-picked upright bass by Aivars Meijers. The microphones used for recording had 1.2u ribbons.

The Blumlein pair of Bumblebee RM-7 DIY Ribbon Microphones was positioned a little closer to the guitar side to compensate the loudness of the upright bass. The microphones were around a meter (three feet) away from the guitar and slightly over a meter (four feet) away from the upright bass.

A rather unusual processing trick was used. In spite the recording was a stereo pair, the separation of tracks was very high, because the instruments and the pair of Bumblebee RM-7 DIY Ribbon Mics formed a triangle, so the microphone picking up the bass was looking at guitar with it null point. So, I have taken the advantage of the situation and added a compressor to the bass track only. The main objective of the compressor was to soften the highest peaks of the finger-picked playing.

Then the panning of tracks was reduced to 25% left and 25% right. the resulting stereo signal was processed the regular way - a multiband compressor with minor gain reduction and some digital reverb. No EQ was used.
