Traditionally this region is mentioned as Kedarkhand in various Hindu scriptures. Garhwal state was ruled by Kshatriyas. Around the 2nd century B.C. Kuninda state also developed. Later this region was under the Katyuri kings who ruled from Katyur valley, Baijnath, Uttarakhand to Kumaon and Garhwal region from 6th century A.D. to 11th century A.D. Later Chand kings started ruling Kumaon, during the same period Garhwal was divided into many small principalities, Hieun Tsang, a Chinese traveller who visited the region around 629 A.D. has mentioned a state named Brahmapur in this region.Before 888 A.D. the entire Garhwal region was divided into small forts ruled by different independent kings. Whose rulers were called Rana, Rai and Thakur. It is said that in 823 A.D. when Prince Kanakpal of Malwa came to visit Shri Badrinath ji, he met the then King Bhanu Pratap there. King Bhanu Pratap, impressed by Prince Kanak Pal, arranged his only daughter's marriage with him and handed over his entire kingdom to him. Gradually, Kanak Pal and his descendants conquered all the forts and expanded the empire. Thus, the entire Garhwal region remained under their control till 1803, i.e. for 915 years.During 1794-95, the Garhwal region suffered from severe famine and again in 1883, this region was afflicted by a terrible earthquake. By then, the Gorkhas had started attacking this region and their influence over this region began. In 1803, they again attacked the Garhwal region during the rule of Maharaja Pradyumna Shah. Maharaja Pradyumna Shah died fighting the Gorkhas in Dehradun, but his only minor son Sudarshan Shah was cleverly saved by his trusted courtiers. After this battle, with the victory of the Gorkhas, their dominion was established in the Garhwal region. After this, his kingdom extended to Kangra and he ruled here for 12 years until he was expelled from Kangra by Maharaja Ranjit Singh. On the other hand, Sudarshan Shah started arranging help from the East India Company to free his kingdom from the Gorkhas. The East India Company merged Kumaon, Dehradun and Eastern Garhwal together into the British Empire and handed over Western Garhwal to King Sudarshan Shah, which came to be known as Tehri Riyasat.
Maharaja Sudarshan Shah established his capital in Tehri Nagar and after this his successors Pratap Shah, Kirti Shah and Narendra Shah established their capitals in Pratap Nagar, Kirti Nagar and Narendra Nagar respectively. Their descendants ruled this region from 1815 to 1949. During the Quit India Movement, the people of this region actively participated in the freedom struggle of India and finally when the country got independence in 1947, the residents of Tehri Riyasat agitated for merger in independent India. Due to this movement, the situation was not in the control of the Maharaja and it became difficult for him to rule, as a result of which the ruler of the Panwar dynasty, Maharaja Manvendra Shah, accepted the sovereignty of the Government of India. Finally, in 1949, the Tehri princely state merged with India. After this, Tehri was given the status of a new district of Uttar Pradesh.
