Edge of Beauty (Folk Rock Fusion) — A Journey Through Dead Horse Point, Utah
In this video, I share 4 minutes of sweeping, soul-stirring footage from Dead Horse Point State Park, Utah — where the desert’s reds and golds meet the sky in dramatic cliffs and mesas. From the overlook you gaze out 2,000 feet above the winding Colorado River, with a panoramic view that stretches into Canyonlands National Park.
About Dead Horse Point and Its Beauty & History
Dead Horse Point is one of those places that feels timeless. Its dramatic overlooks, rugged canyon country, layered rock formations, the ever-changing light – sunrise, sunset, midday sun, shadow – all combine into something powerful, almost spiritual. The State Park was established in 1959; the overlook is perched atop a mesa, 2,000 ft (≈ 609 meters) above the Colorado River, overlooking the sculpted pinnacles, buttes, and deep canyons of the Canyonlands region.
Legend has it that the point got its name because in the 19th century, cowboys used the natural cliff edges as a corral — binding off a narrow neck of land so wild mustangs could be gathered. On one occasion (or so the story goes), the horses were left there with no water, and tragically perished under the sun, visible from the river far below.
Flora and fauna here have adapted to extremes: sparse water, extreme temperature swings, rugged terrain. The landscape is raw, majestic, and full of contrast: silence broken by wind, light catching rock, shadows cradling canyon. All of that spoke deeply to me when I wrote Edge of Beauty.
Why I Wrote This Song
I wanted to capture the feeling of awe — standing at the edge of a vista so vast it humbles you — and the tension between permanence and fragility. The rock has been carved over millions of years; yet the moment — the light, the feeling — is fleeting. The contrast between red stone and sky, between shadow and glow, between solitude and connection inspired the folk-rock fusion sound: earthy instruments grounded in old traditions, paired with the energy of modern expression. I wrote this song to honor that raw beauty, to give voice to what I felt standing on that rim, looking out over the Colorado River, over Canyonlands, wishing I could linger, but also knowing that part of beauty is its impermanence.
