The dose for paracetamol is calculated by using the formula 15mg/kg, means for each kg of body wieght, we will give 15mg of paracetamol. for example if body weight is 5kg, then we will give 75mg paracetamol.
Now here lets take example by using panadol syrup of strenght 120mg/5ml, and see how you will calculate dose for it
120mg/5ml means that each 5ml of syrup contains 120mg of pareacetamol dose,
which means 1 ml will contain 24mg of paracetamol, which we get by diving 120 by 5.
As we told earlier, for 5kg, the total dose is 75mg, so dividing the total dose which is 75mg by amountof paracetamol in 1 ml of syrup which is 24mg. you will get 3ml, which is the dose,you have to give to your 5kg baby, and repeat after every 4 to six hours.
Lets see, the dosing schedule for different ages and weight groups . as an example, we are taking panadol. but other brands of paracetamol are also available in the market. panadol comes in drops, which is 100mg per ml. syrup, which is 120mg per 5ml. and 250mg per 5ml syrup. we will tell you, dose for each of these brands
