Welcome to my 3-month update on this lush, jungle-style betta fish tank! This 8-gallon nano tank is home to Marmalade, my vibrant female betta, and it’s been designed to be one of the easiest planted aquarium setups for beginners to replicate. Whether you're new to aquascaping or looking for inspiration for your next planted tank, this setup offers beauty, simplicity, and functionality all in one.

The foundation of the scape includes Fluval Stratum as the nutrient-rich substrate, Seiryu stone, and spider wood for natural hardscape structure. I carried these elements over from a previous setup to maintain beneficial bacteria and stability. From there, I packed the tank with easy-care aquarium plants that thrive in a low-tech environment.

The centerpiece aquatic plant is Anubias 'Coin Leaf', which I carefully glued to the hardscape by the roots—never the rhizome—to ensure healthy growth. The foreground features Eleocharis (dwarf hair grass), which is now filling in nicely to create a grassy, carpeted effect. I originally started with a moss mat, but hair grass has proven to be a better fit for the look and maintenance level I wanted.

In the midground and background areas, you’ll find a selection of stunning aquatic plants including:

Echinodorus 'Tropica' – compact with bold, textured leaves

Cryptocoryne nurii – showing beautiful pink hues and tiger striping under 8 hours of full-intensity light from the Hygger 957

Cryptocoryne wendtii ‘Green’ and ‘Mi Oya’ – for added color and leaf shape diversity

Limnophila sessiliflora – a fast-growing stem plant that completes the wild, overgrown jungle aesthetic

This betta tank is filtered using the Nicrew Slim hang-on-back filter. I upgraded the included cartridge by swapping in 30ppi sponge from a mature filter and adding filter floss for polished water clarity and strong biological filtration.

Of course, the real star of the tank is Marmalade the betta. She’s calm, curious, and coexists peacefully with Neocaridina shrimp and a few ramshorn snails. While the snails do a great job cleaning up, they also breed rapidly and contribute a lot of waste. To manage that, I added a bottled waste-eating bacteria product. It worked very effectively—maybe too effectively—as it caused a sudden breakdown of organic material and led to an algae bloom. I had to act quickly with daily 50% water changes to restore balance.

Up top, I added floating Amazon Frogbit, now thriving inside a floating ring away from the filter outflow. The long roots create natural hiding spots that Marmalade absolutely loves. For additional nutrient export and visual interest, I’m growing emersed plants like Pothos, Peace Lily, Tradescantia, and a small Monstera in a custom 3D-printed holder above the tank. While these help with nutrient control, their main purpose is to enhance the immersive, jungle-like atmosphere.

This fish tank is a perfect blend of simplicity and natural beauty. It’s beginner-friendly, low-maintenance, and a great example of how a planted aquarium can be both functional and visually stunning.
