When you sell your food at a farmer's market, you're able to increase your revenue and make it more profitable for you to sell at farmer's markets. In this video, I'm going to run down six ways that you can increase your income from selling food products at these markets. Number one, being the most important aspect that you should implement is a sample. This is one that is a little tricky, but is a huge benefit. Some states don't allow you to do this because of the cottage food law.

But when you start to sample a product, if you can give customers a small sample, a small portion of that product, you'll have much more success and likelihood of selling it. One thing you want to keep in mind is that you don't want to make your samples too big, because remember that all of these items that you're making are costing you money to make. So you're not going to give away more than you're actually going to sell. When it comes to food products, number five, a lot of farmers' market vendors don't take debit or credit cards. They want to get cash in hand for every transaction.

You need to have this form of payment available for every customer that comes to your booth or comes to the farmer. If you sell something for $5.99 and it costs you 35 cents to make the transaction, you know what to go to $6 and 50 cents go up and let the customer absorb that payment for you, as opposed to you absorbing it. And if they come back next weekend and the weekend after that, that is going to be more of a benefit for you. It shows and it reflects on how you run your business and the type of food products that you have. Number one, there's a lot about you as a seller at the farmer's market.
Take pride in your booth. If you've got a group of people, they come through your booth, they buy a bunch of products, or they're kind of picking through things. Take a look around and find out what the price points are in the area where products similar to what you're selling are sold. Make sure you price it to sell and include packaging, labeling, and ingredients in the price. If you're a small business and you're at home, don't factor in so much labor at first, because you're probably the only one making the product and it's not too important just yet.

The booth that stands out the most has an eye-catching, amazing, colorful, eye-grabbing signage table tent. There are companies out there who can create custom tents, and believe it or not, custom tables, table cloths, and banners and signage. How do you get more sales at the farmer's market? Don't just have a boring white tent with some cookies and a little sign on the table, make sure that your signage catches people's attention. If it's Damien's chocolate chip cookies, it needs to be in big, colorful letters. Make sure that your signage is what's calling people to your booth.
