In the beginning of this Arterial Surgery lecture, gangrene is discussed that arises when Blood supply is restricted to an area of the body. It can be caused by an underlying illness, injury, or Infection. There are two types of gangrene discussed in this lecture. One is dry gangrene and the other is wet gangrene.

Acute arterial occlusion can occur in any peripheral artery of the upper and lower extremities and causes severe ischaemia. Embolic occlusion is also discussed that causes life-threatening ischaemia as well. This is followed by acute limb ischaemia that is characterized by pallor, loss of pulsation, paralysis, limb cold, and paraesthesia.

Acute limb ischaemia can be treated by IV infusion of heparin along with the surgery. The surgical options include embolectomy that is the removal of an embolus. Alongside, thrombolysis is performed through which Blood clots are treated.

Compartment syndrome is a condition which arises due to increased pressure in the leg or arm compartment and thus Blood supply is decreased to that area. To relieve this pressure, a surgical procedure known as fasciotomy is performed that is discussed in detail in this online General Surgery lecture.

Acute mesenteric ischaemia is associated with decreased Blood supply to bowel which in turn leads to bowel ischaemia. What else is discussed for medical students in this surgery lecture is the other forms of embolism such as infective emboli of bacteria, parasitic emboli, fat embolism, and venous emboli. This is followed by an explanation of air embolism and therapeutic embolization.
