Gay Christian Learns to Reconcile his Faith and Sexuality. “God Made Me the Way that I Am.”

Cameron Reck grew up in a conservative Christian household and struggled with his sexuality from an early age. He tried to suppress his feelings and believed he could "fix" himself - even attending a Christian college that he thought might help him somehow change his sexuality. Though he continued to remain closeted in college, it was there that he met Lizzie - a fellow student and soon-to-be best friend. After being caught in a lie while on his first-ever gay date, Cameron knew he couldn’t keep his sexuality a secret to Lizzie any longer.

Over an emotional dinner, Cameron opened up to Lizzie about his sexuality. Rather than reject him, she comforted and embraced him, revealing that her own father was gay and had come out to her when she was a child. A week later she gave him a life-changing book: Torn: Rescuing the Gospel from the Gay-vs.-Christian Debate. This book helped him reconcile his faith with his sexuality, and gave him the space to live openly both as a gay man and as a person of faith.
