Скачать или смотреть South Africa's president visits site of devastating building fire which killed at least 74

At least 74 people have died and dozens more were injured after a fire tore through a five-story building in central Johannesburg which had been turned into informal housing.

Eyewitness video shot in the early hours of Thursday morning shows crowds of people outside the building while others jump from windows or balconies to escape from the building.

At least 12 children were among those killed.

The fire has now been extinguished, rescue officials said.

In addition to the dead, more than 50 other people were injured.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa visited the site on Thursday the site.

Ramaphosa made the visit after cancelling a Thursday evening television address on the BRICS economic summit held in Johannesburg last week.

Authorities hadn't established the cause of the fire, but local government officials said initial evidence suggested it started with a candle.

Inhabitants used candles and fires for light and to keep warm in the winter cold, officials added.
