✔️During pregnancy, a pregnant person and their fetus usually do not share blood.
➡️But sometimes a small amount of blood from the fetus can enter the maternal circulation through a fetomaternal hemorrhage (FMH).

✔️After the first FMH, the pregnant person’s body will recognize that Rh+ blood as foreign and make anti-Rh antibodies (Abs).
➡️In subsequent pregnancies, these Abs can cross the placenta and attack the fetal RBCs if the fetus is Rh+.
➡️This can cause hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN)—a serious type of anemia in the fetus in which RBC are destroyed.
➡️The severity of fetal anemia is influenced primarily by Ab concentration.

✔️Events that can cause FMH include:
➡️Exchange of blood during labor and birth
➡️Amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling (CVS)
➡️Bleeding during pregnancy ➡️Attempts to manually turn a fetus so they are head-down for birth
➡️Trauma to the abdomen ➡️Miscarriage
➡️Ectopic pregnancy
➡️Induced abortion

✔️Problems during pregnancy caused by Rh incompatibility can be prevented.
➡️Rh immunoglobulin (Rhlg or Rhogam) is an injection that can stop the body from making Abs.
➡️RhIg can prevent severe fetal anemia.
➡️RhIg is given as an injection. ➡️RHIg prevents an Rh- person from making Abs against a future pregnancy.
➡️The treatment is good only for the pregnancy for which it is given.
➡️Each pregnancy and delivery requires a dose of RhIg.

✔️RhIg is given routinely at 28 weeks in an Rh- pregnant person.
➡️It is also given after events that can cause FMH.

✔️After your baby is born, the doctor will do a blood test on the baby to check their blood type.
➡️If your baby is Rh+, you will get another dose of RhIg soon after delivery.

✔️Rh- people are treated with RhIg during each pregnancy, as long as they don’t have Abs in their blood.

✔️If you already have Abs in your blood, RhIg will not help.
➡️But different tests to monitor your baby during pregnancy will be done to monitor for the development of fetal anemia.
