When Bill Murray invites you to play golf in Vidalia, Georgia (yes, where the onions come from), you don't ask questions - you just go. I mean, we're talking about Big Ern McCrackin and Carl Spackler here. And the thing is - we AREN'T talking about Bushwood Country Club either - we played Ohoopee Match Club, which was recently rated the 34th Greatest Golf Course in America.
This place is a golfers dream, built purely for match play. Speaking of matches, Bill and I played one... although I'm still not quite sure who actually won. Between him telling stories from my favorite movies growing up and giving me his take on everything from putting styles to proper hat selection, I was too entertained to keep score. That's the beauty of match play though - it's more about the moments than the final score. And this course was built for exactly that kind of golf. No stroke play, no scorecards, just you against your opponent, hole by hole.
Fun fact: The course sits right in Georgia's onion country, and while most people know Vidalia for its sweet onions, the golf out here is pretty sweet too. The Ohoopee River runs through the property, and every hole feels like it was designed specifically for match play - risk vs reward, and lots of decisions to make.
Big thanks to Bill Murray (still can't believe I get to say that) and everyone at Ohoopee for an unforgettable round. And yes, we did hit a few shots that would make Carl Spackler proud (though we're both still working on total consciousness).
