We build fences to signify: "This is my space. If you come here, it's because I give you permission as a guest."

It's a distinction. You’re saying, "On this particular plot of land, we are not equals. If you violate my domain, I reserve the right to remove you."

In the context of recovery, there’s a parallel principle.

If you want people to show appreciation for the nuance of your story, and forbearance for your weakness and sensitivity—you must give the same kind of latitude you demand.

Either that, or you should admit: "I am not this person's equal, therefore I should not challenge or demand accountability from them as though I were."

Anything else is trespassing. “Hopping the fence." Jumping to conclusions.

In his letter to the Corinthians, Paul warned believers: “Do not judge a matter before its time.”

He knew how often we think we understand something… when in reality, we don’t.

You may not walk through the front door of my house without permission, expecting a hero’s welcome.

In a similar vein, you may not barge into my context and demand I account for it—especially if you haven't inquired or understood it.

Fence-hopping like that dehumanizes a person. It heaps contempt upon their dignity.

It’s part of the reason I'm in recovery in the first place.

And it’s why I refuse to tolerate it.
