Shipyard Stories: The Maritime History of Cockatoo Island

Описание к видео Shipyard Stories: The Maritime History of Cockatoo Island

Cockatoo Island has a remarkable history as a shipbuilding and ship repair facility, contributing significantly to the nation’s maritime affairs between 1857 and 1992. The island was used for shipbuilding from 1870 and, in 1913, became the official dockyard of the Royal Australian Navy. During the First World War, the island’s dockyard facilities were expanded to facilitate increased naval activity and, during the Second World War, the dockyard was the main ship repair facility in the Southwest pacific. During the dockyard’s final 20 years of operation, its principal role was the refit and maintenance of submarines. In this video, John Jeremy, the final CEO of Cockatoo Dockyard Pty Ltd, leads viewers on a journey through 135 years of maritime history at Cockatoo Island and offers his personal reflections.
