As the British approached the city of Sokoto, Nigeria, in 1903, the new Sultan Muhammadu Attahiru I organized a quick defense of the city and fought the advancing British-led forces. The British force quickly won, sending Sultan Attahiru I and thousands of followers on a Mahdist hijra. The British pursued them and decisive confrontation took place at Mbormi Battle Ground, near present-day Gombe, in March 1903.
