Описание к видео Recovering Dorothy: Dorothy Wordsworth after the Grasmere Journals

Dr Polly Atkin’s new book Recovering Dorothy: The Hidden Life of Dorothy Wordsworth breaks new ground as she tells the story of the Dorothy that many don’t know: disabled, housebound – who makes her sick room into a garden for herself and her pet robin, and who is finally able to call herself a poet. On 27 January 2022 she joined Dr Jo Taylor in conversation as they discussed the lesser-known period of Dorothy's life and explored some incredible objects close-up on the screen, including the last of Dorothy’s Rydal journals.

About the speakers

Polly Atkin is a poet and nonfiction writer based in Grasmere. Her first poetry collection Basic Nest Architecture (Seren: 2017) is followed by second, Much With Body (Seren: 2021), and a biography Recovering Dorothy: The Hidden Life of Dorothy Wordsworth (Saraband: 2021). She is working on a memoir exploring place, belonging and disability. She has taught English and Creative Writing at QMUL, Lancaster University, and the Universities of Strathclyde and Cumbria. In 2019 she co-founded the Open Mountain initiative at Kendal Mountain Festival, which seeks to centre voices that are currently at the margins of outdoor, mountain and nature writing.

Joanna E. Taylor is Presidential Fellow in Digital Humanities at the University of Manchester. Her research focuses on intersections between literary landscapes, environmental humanities, and digital methods, with a particular focus on the Romantic period. Her book, co-authored with Ian Gregory and titled Deep Mapping the Literary Lake District, will be out with Bucknell UP in June 2022, and features Dorothy and William Wordsworth as prominent presences.

This conversation was hosted by Jeff Cowton, Principal Curator & Head of Learning at Wordsworth Grasmere.
