General oscillator discussion and some specific info about the phase shift oscillator. An oscilloscope is used to show the waveform shape, and the FFT function is used to show distortion products from the oscillator and how harmonics vary with output level. Your eye might think it looks good but the FFT function might say otherwise.

Usually with this type of oscillator you want to achieve as pure an output as possible with just the fundamental being generated and no harmonics, which would equate to zero distortion.
