THEY WANTED WINE
Pastor Gene Benson — Lapine Assembly — December 6, 2025 PM
Text: John 2:1–11
“When they wanted wine… the mother of Jesus said to Him, ‘They have no wine.’”
At the wedding in Cana, everything looked right — Jesus was there, the disciples were there, the celebration was happening — but the wine had run out. This is the picture of many in the church today. They are in the right place, around the right people, but the fullness of the Spirit is missing. There is often a long gap between losing something, missing it, and finally longing for it again.

🍷 Recognizing the Lack
Mary saw what no one else acknowledged: “They have no wine.” Somebody must be spiritually awake enough to discern the true condition of the moment. Someone must be bold enough to speak to it.
Faithful wounds may hurt, but they heal. When something has set wrong, God sometimes breaks it to set it right.
They Wanted Wine
It is possible to be in the presence of Jesus and still not receive from Him. Martha took Jesus into her house but never took time to know Him. Many come to church but never open their hearts to the Spirit.

🔥 The Third Day and the Fullness of God
The “third day” in this story speaks of fullness — Father, Son, and Holy Ghost; omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent. Wine itself symbolizes more than survival. Water is necessary for life, but wine represents abundance, joy, and overflow. Jesus came not just to give life, but life more abundantly.

The Holy Spirit is that surpassing gift — the One who excels, supersedes, and overflows in the believer. This is why Acts should truly be called The Acts of the Holy Ghost through the apostles.

💧 The Fullness of the Spirit
Scripture describes the Spirit with words of life — fire, oil, rivers, wine, wind. Everywhere the Spirit moves, fullness appears.
Examples from Acts:
• They were full of new wine (Acts 2).
• Stephen was full of faith and the Holy Ghost.
• Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, preached with boldness.
• The disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Ghost.
They Wanted Wine
Paul wrote: “Be filled with the Spirit.”
Jesus said the Father gives the Spirit to those who ask.
The promise is for you, your children, and all who are far off.

🙏 The Desire for More
Mary said, “They want wine.” Desire is the prerequisite for Spirit–full living.
• “If any man thirst, let him come unto Me and drink.”
• “He that hungers and thirsts after righteousness shall be filled.”
• “Whatever you pray, believe that you receive.”
They Wanted Wine
Too many have settled for survival instead of fullness. It grieves the heart of God when we pick and choose among His gifts, deciding which blessings matter based on our limited understanding. If you want wine — the fullness of His Spirit — this word is for you. And if you don’t yet want it, may God stir the thirst within you.

✨ Key Truth
The presence of Jesus is not the same as the fullness of Jesus. If you want the wine of the Spirit, you must desire Him, ask Him, and be willing to obey whatever He says. The waterpots are still waiting to be filled.
