In August 1975, China experienced an exceptionally intense period of rainfall due to a combination of weather factors. Several typhoons and monsoons converged over the region, leading to excessive rainfall and raising water levels in rivers and reservoirs.

One of the most affected structures was the Banqiao Dam, which was part of the extensive South-North Water Transfer Project designed to control flooding and provide irrigation.
