The history of the Boer horse is as old as the history of the white civilization in Southern Africa. The growth and development of the breed were parallel and inseparably connected to the history of the white settlers.
The Boerperd is a modern breed of horse from South Africa. It is a re-creation of the traditional Cape Horse or old-type Boer Horse, which is now extinct.
During the Boer Wars between 1880 and 1902, many old-type Boer horses were killed: some died in the fighting, while others were shot on Boer farms. By the end of the wars, numbers were greatly reduced and conservation efforts began. From 1905 until about 1920 the horses could be registered with the horse-breeders' association of Transvaal.
A breeders' association, the Kaapse Boerperd Breeders' Society of South Africa, was formed in 1948. A separate association, the Boerperd Society of South Africa, formed in 1973. It became the Historiese Boerperd Breeders Society in 1977, and SA Boerperd in 1998. The Historiese Boerperd was officially recognised by the Department of Agriculture in 1996. Both associations are members of the SA Stud Book Association.
MHS Boerperd Stud was established in early 2018 with an imported stallion and several mares from the famed Aandag SA Boerperd Stud in South Africa. The SA Boerperd thrives in tough conditions, have lovely temperaments and are indigenous to Africa.
Also called South African Boerperd, and the Kaapse Boerperd, the Boer horse comes from the same stock as the Basuto pony. However the Boer is found in a much milder climate allowing them to grow more robust.
Originated from the Cape Horse of South Africa, this breed also displays characteristics of Flemish, Hackney and Cleveland Bay animals imported to the area.
The Boerperd Society of South Africa was established in 1973 to preserve and document the bloodlines of the breed. Today these animals are rare and found in isolated herds in Transvaal, Natal, Eastern Free State and the Cape Province.
