What’s the difference between Outcomes and Outputs?

When setting OKRs, teams sometimes focus on Outputs as Key Results when they could have more of an impact using Outcomes.

Ryan Panchadsaram, Elizabeth Dunne and Peter Kappus, discuss the difference between Outputs and Outcomes and how to reframe Outputs as Outcomes when setting OKRs with your team.

Outputs are the effects of your inputs. Increasing sales revenue, reaching performance benchmarks or attracting a certain number of attendees to a conference are all Outputs. Outcomes are a more advanced way to think about Outputs. Outputs tend to describe the desired end result itself.

Outcomes often emphasize the “before” and “after” more clearly than either an input or an output.
