The verbs of "maison d'ÊTRE" and how to conjugate them in passé composé!

Do you think it is difficult to know which verbs needs to use the auxiliary ÊTRE in passé composé? 🤯

Although most French verbs use the verb AVOIR as an auxiliary verb to form the passé composé (or any other compound tense as plus-que-parfait for example), a few take ÊTRE as the auxiliary.

These verbs are called in French «verbes de mouvement» and «verbes d’état» and indicate a movement or a change of location or express a state of being.

To help memorizing these verbs, I prefer to talk about the verbs of the Maison d’ÊTRE since all these verbs can be visualized around a house.

THE VERBS USING ÊTRE AS AN AUXILIARY VERB ARE:
entrer = to enter, go inside, go in
rentrer = to go back in, come back in, come home
sortir = to go out
partir = to leave
arriver = to arrive
monter = to go up, climb up, get on
descendre = to go down, get off
aller = to go
venir = to come
naître = to be born
mourir = to die
rester = to stay, remain
passer = to pass, drop by, stop by, come over
tomber = to fall (down, over)
retourner = to go back, return
revenir = to come back

HOW TO FORM THE PASSÉ COMPOSÉ:
To form the passé composé with a verb from the Maison d’ÊTRE, you need to conjugate the auxiliary ÊTRE in present and add the past participle of the main verb.
Je suis entré(e)
Tu es entré(e)
Il est entré
Elle est entrée
Nous sommes entré(e)s
Vous êtes entré(e)(s)
Ils sont entrés
Elles sont entrées

HOW TO FORM THE PAST PARTICIPLE:
For all regular -ER verbs, remove the -ER from the infinitive and replace it with -É ➡️ entrer - entré
For all regular -IR verbs, remove the -IR from the infinitive and replace it with -I ➡️ sortir - sorti
For all regular -RE verbs, remove the -RE from the infinitive and replace it with -U ➡️ descendre - descendu
 
Then you have all the irregular verbs that don’t follow any pattern and that you have to learn by heart 😉
 
Here are the irregular past participles of the Maison d’ÊTRE:
venir - venu
revenir - revenu
naître - né
mourir - mort

THE LIAISON:
The liaison between the subject pronouns (JE, TU, IL, ELLE, NOUS, VOUS, ILS, ELLES) and the auxiliary verb is mandatory:
Vous➰êtes entrés
Where as the liaison between the auxiliary verb and the main verb is optional:
Je suis❌entré / Je suis➰entré

AGREEMENT OF PAST PARTICIPLE:
When you use the verb ÊTRE as an auxiliary, you must remember to agree the past participle with the subject. 
Here is an example with the verb ENTRER:
Je suis entré / je suis entrée
Tu es entré / tu es entrée
Il est entré / Elle est entrée
Nous sommes entrés / Nous sommes entrées
Vous êtes entré (Monsieur) / Vous êtes entrée (Madame)
Vous êtes entrés / Vous êtes entrées
Ils sont entrés / Elles sont entrées
