Something Different - Horology: Ronda 515 Coil Replacement

Something Completely Different - perhaps a possible series or just a diversion from the expected on this channel. This video explores one of my many hobbies that I find incompatible with a tobacco pipe - horology, or more accurately, watch repair. I prefer to think of watch tinkerers as mechanics rather than watchmakers. Certainly there are watchmakers, I'm just not one of them.

As a tinkering watch mechanic, I was asked by an acquaintance if his Wenger Seaforce watch could be repaired. It's not an old watch and was running up until a recent battery change. The quartz movement turned out to be a current production Ronda 515, so replacements wouldn't be a problem and are rather inexpensive. Once I explored the movement, it seemed pretty clear the coil winding had been damaged and the coil could be easily replaced. In looking for a replacement coil, which are readily available from China, it became clear that I could get the entire movement for almost the same price. So begins the rest of the story.

This video is in two parts. The first part replaces the coil in the watch, while the second part realizes my belief that I could patch the the broken coil wire with a small bit of electrically conductive adhesive used to fix circuit boards. The second part starts at about the 20 minute mark and begins with the resistance testing of the repaired coil followed by the reassembly of the donor movement.

While this may be agonizing long, or similar to an ASMR video, it may actually be of some interest to other watch tinkerers with a damaged coil. It might also go well with a good pipe and tobacco. I hope you find something of interest within. Peace.
