Unser Gottesdienst fand am 12. Juni 2022 (dem Sonntag Trinitatis) in der Dorfkirche in Wasdow statt. Der Predigttext war die Epistel des Tages: Römer 11, 32-36. Da die Organistinnen der Gemeinde am Sonntag nicht spielen konnte, musste der Pastor selbst an die Orgel (die Fehler bitte verzeihen!). In der vergangenen Woche hat jemand mir empfohlen, für die englischsprachigen Zuschauer eine kurze Zusammenfassung zu schreiben. Das erfolgt hier unten.

Our (German) worship service on June 12, 2022, "Trinity Sunday", was held in the village church in Wasdow near Gnoien. The sermon text was the epistle of the day: Romans 11: 32-36. Since both organists had other obligations on this Sunday, Pastor Grell had to play the organ (excuse the mistakes!). For the first time a short summary of the sermon for the English speaking community: The sermon was introduced with reference to Hans Christian Andersen's story the "The Fir Tree" from 1844 (the rats that were bored by the tree's story of "Klumpe and Dumpe" - a story that enthralled the mice up until that day). What catches our attention? What makes us look closely, listen intently, learn more intensely? Amazement lies at the core of all (good) entertainment, learning and knowledge and genuine worship. Amazed by God's mercy Paul breaks out in praise in Romans 11: 32-36. Surprisingly enough he does this after grappling with God's plan and course for his people Israel. This reminds us of the final chapters of Job where Job after wrestling with God is shown the works of God and comes to realize his place in the vast realm of God's mercy. This is the same God who creates all things and saves those most lost and far from him (being revealed in Jesus Christ). His mercy is unfathomable, jolts us out of preconceptions of God, frees us from wishful thinking and to trust and prayer. We may not understand God and struggle with his will, but in light of the risen Lord we know that all his will and ways serve to the good. This being amazed by the unfathomable mercy of God is the basis of the doctrine of Trinity. It motivates all of our worship and dealing as church ("Trinity" is not something for one single Sunday, is not just a doctrine that is latched on to things more essential like a frivolous accessory - all that we do as Christians results from and returns to the triune God), and throughout all of the different stages and phases of its develope from the church fathers and early synods with their creeds, Luthers Theology of the Cross, Jakob Böhmes "Theosophy", Schelling's and Hegel's philosophy and more modern teachings from Barth and Jüngel the confession to the triune God has been inspired and shaped by the amazement over God's unfathomable love in Jesus Christ.
