This weekend, a major training exercise will take place in Cheshire to test the effectiveness of Northwich's flood defences. The Environment Agency (EA) is leading this operation, which involves erecting temporary barriers and closing floodgates.
The £7m flood alleviation scheme, launched in 2018, protects over 400 homes and businesses. During the exercise, barriers will be set up outside Wildwood and the cinema, and floodgates at Waitrose and Dane Bridge will be closed.
Temporary defences, made of aluminium, can be quickly deployed in the event of a flood alert. At Dane Bridge, a unique channel system prevents water from spilling over onto London Road or Watling Street.
The floodgates create a seal, offering protection from floodwater. This scheme has been deployed multiple times during the 2024-25 storm season, including during Storm Bert.
Councillor Karen Shore emphasizes the importance of this exercise, stating that while these measures provide reassurance, residents should also prepare for flooding by signing up for free flood warnings online.
