Under Motown's Hitsville label, they soared in the '60s with hits like “Reach Out I’ll Be There,” “Baby I Need Your Loving,” and “I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch).” Obie's bass anchored their sound, while Levi Stubbs' lead vocals brought raw emotion.

Beyond performing, Obie co-wrote Marvin Gaye's iconic “What's Going On,” inspired by witnessing police confront protesters in Berkeley.
