Over 250 animal lovers gathered at Joggers Park, Carter Road, Bandra, on Thursday to oppose the Supreme Court’s August 11 directive ordering the removal of all stray dogs from Delhi-NCR and their permanent confinement in shelters. The protest was timed with the court reserving its verdict on petitions challenging the order.

Organised by Citizens for Animal Protection (CAP), Pawasana, PETA, World For All, Youth Organisation in Defence of Animals (YODA), Dog Mantra, and DAWA India, the demonstration highlighted concerns over inadequate infrastructure, non-existent government shelters, and limited sterilisation facilities. Protesters warned that large-scale relocation without proper facilities could endanger the welfare of street dogs.

Long-time feeders and caregivers said they already vaccinate and treat dogs at their own expense, often without donations, and called for public education on rabies prevention and dog behaviour. Some questioned the use of government animal welfare funds, stressing that providing resources to community caregivers could address the issue more effectively.

Holding placards and chanting “Awara Nahi, Hamare Hai” (“They’re not strays, they’re ours”), participants demanded sterilisation, vaccination, and awareness programmes instead of mass confinement.

“Stray dogs have been part of our communities for decades. They attack only when they sense fear; otherwise, they spread love,” said Aakash Shukla, dog behaviourist and founder of Dog Mantra. CAP founder Sushank Tomar added that his group had created guidelines for authorities and offered expert help in implementing humane control measures.

Organisers said peaceful demonstrations would continue until the order is reconsidered.
