Thursday 2/29/24 Notice

Peace be with you. In the Gospel today Jesus said to the Pharisees: "There was a rich man who dressed in purple garments and fine linen and dined sumptuously each day. And lying at his door was a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who would gladly have eaten his fill of the scraps that fell from the rich man's table. Dogs even used to come and lick his sores. When the poor man died, he was carried away by angels to the bosom of Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried, and from the netherworld, where he was in torment, he raised his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side.” Jesus’ compassion is lavish. It is manifest in His Incarnation and exemplified in His forgiving us from the cross even before we were sorry. This parable is a clarion call to compassion. An important first step of living the virtue of compassion is noticing. The rich man who ate his fill every day had to have walked past the hungry, starving Lazarus everyday as he lay at his door. Was the rich man that callous, or simply too busy or absorbed in his daily work to notice? We, as friends of Jesus, are called and empowered to notice the needs of those around us and respond with compassion. Take some time today and reflect with Jesus on the people in your life - who could use a word of affirmation or a little extra TLC? Let’s pray for one another. God bless.
